We are pleased to announce the June 2016 launch of Phase 2 of our Capital Campaign! What was formerly known as Phase 2 & 3 have been streamlined into a single phase with a focus on sustaining and improving our amazing trail system while providing the infrastructure improvements that will enable and inspire a healthy, active, year-round Birkie lifestyle!
We are excited to announce the plans for the new OO Nordic Center - a gateway to facilitate a wide variety of outdoor activities for people of all ages and abilities - a place for people to gather, organize, rally, educate and come together. The planned facility will provide year-round heated bathrooms, large gathering area, community/group meeting room, kitchen area, vending area, and wax & bike maintenance area. Adjacent to the Nordic Center will be a multi-station fitness trail. The new OO Nordic Center furthers our mission to enable and inspire the healthy, active, ‘Birkie’ lifestyle!
The quality of our events and sustainability of our trail system requires rather extensive trail improvements & repairs that will assist us in low snow years. Additional improvement include the creation of the new Korte start area, an initial investment in snowmaking equipment, an additional ‘wide’ Pisten Bully 400, and, the beginning of the much anticipated extension of the Classic Trail from OO south.
The infrastructure additions of warming shelters at Timber Trail & Gravel Pit, drilled wells at all warming shelters, and the new Hwy 77 underpass at Fish Hatchery, will improve the efficiency of all Birkie events and the safety of participants, volunteers, and all others who utilize our extensive 107k trail system throughout the year.

We are very excited to announce that our Phase 1 goal of $650,000 has been met! A huge thank you goes out to the over 1,700 people who contributed to this campaign. Individual donations from $10 to over $50,000 were received over a 7-month period of time. Birkie enthusiasts from around the world contributed to help sustain and support the trail and the organization that inspires your year-round active lifestyle.
It all began in 1206 with the Birkebeiner skiers, so called for their protective birch bark leggings, skiing through the treacherous mountains and rugged forests of Norway's Osterdalen valley - smuggling the son of King Sverresson and Inga of Vartieg to safety. The story and painting of the flight were the inspiration for the first Birkebeiner ski race held in Norway in 1932. The race known today as the American Birkebeiner began in 1973 as the dream of the late Tony Wise. Thirty-four men and one lone woman were on the starting line clad in woolen sweaters and knickers for the 50-kilometer race from the Lumberjack Bowl in Hayward to Telemark Lodge in Cable, Wisconsin. The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (Birkie) is entering in to a new phase of its history. With over 40 years of heritage and excellence as a premiere international cross country ski competition, many have asked “What’s next for the Birkie?” Our mission is strong, remains unchanged, and gives us purpose & direction:
